It may be hard to believe, but the Go Red for Women movement has been off and running for over ten years, and what an amazing job it has done to raise awareness of heart disease in women. Its mission has always been to promote healthy lifestyle changes and thereby decrease our risk of heart attacks and strokes. Locally, the San Antonio chapter of the American Heart Association continues to be extremely active in this movement and welcomes any and all women to join the effort to bring attention to this often silent killer.

Great strides have been made in the past 10 years since the beginnings of Go Red for Women. One-third fewer women die of heart disease, and significant numbers of women are losing weight, checking their cholesterol, exercising, improving diets, and quitting smoking. However, far too many women still die of heart disease, so there is much to be done in our fight!

No matter what our age group, prevention of heart disease is possible. This shouldn’t be a difficult task. Get started by doing these three simple things:

  1. Learn about heart disease, including its common (and often not so common) symptoms.
  2. Know your own risks.
  3. Live healthy. It’s never too late to start taking care of yourself.
